Pop music is one of the old genres of popular music. Though Popular Music is a common term that is used as a reference to all the music that is popular and in it a lot of varieties are included, ‘Pop’ and ‘Popular Music’ is often used interchangeably.

Some people believe that the songs of music hall of the Victorian era were first real pop music, created by professionals. In the 20th century, with the start of recording, many professional song writers emerged and Pop style started gaining wide popularity. The records of early emerging pop stars like the crooners of the 30s and ’40s, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby & Al Bowly, were sold in lakhs of copies. Modern Pop Music has its roots in the U.S.A. and England from the middle of 1950. pop music charts started emerging from 1950s, when the first Top 20 was released. During this time, the Rock N Roll started becoming very popular and Elvis Presley became a global superstar. Later on, the Beatles raised the bar for pop music, and it remains popular even today. For over a decade in the 60s and 70s, before their break up, they topped the charts in U.K. & U.S.A.

Pop music derives its taste from a broad and diverse range of sources such as soft rock, country, urban, dance music, etc. yet there are basic elements which define pop music. Characteristic features are inclusion of generally short to medium length songs written in a primary format, and also the general use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, & hooks. From the start of 21st century, R&B and Hip Hop have become a Pop Style.
